The steps
- Find your local Public Housing Agency (PHA). Every area is served by one or more PHAs, which run the voucher program locally. You can look yours up on HUD's official website.
- Submit your application. Many PHAs let you apply online; others take applications in person. You'll provide basic details about your household, income, and current housing.
- Get placed on the waiting list, if needed. Because demand is high, most areas keep a waiting list. Wait times range from a few months in rural areas to a few years in large cities.
- Complete your eligibility review. When your name comes up, the PHA verifies your income and documents and confirms you qualify.
- Receive your voucher and find a home. Once approved, you choose a rental that meets the program's requirements and move in.
Documents to have ready
- Government-issued photo ID for every adult
- Social Security numbers for everyone in the household
- Proof of income (recent pay stubs, benefit letters)
- Bank statements — usually the last few months, all pages
- Rental history and landlord references
